Hamburg's "Stadtradeln" campaign beats own target

Although the last kilometres have yet to be counted, residents of Hamburg have already cycled 1.1 million kilometres and topped the 1 million mark between August 30 and September 19, 2019. During that period, companies across the city and their employees were urged to leave their own cars at home and to hop on their bikes as part of the City Cycling international campaign organised by the Climate Alliance for Improved Air and the Allgemeinen Deutschen Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) on behalf of the Ministry for the Environment and Energy.

Kerstan setting example with 178 kilometres

“The results of Hamburg’s cycling campaign are first class. I would like to thank almost 6,500 activists for their weeks of commitment,” said Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment, adding: “I had hoped, but hardly expected, that we would be so good at the second campaign.” Kerstan’s personal record is 178 kilometres.

Number of activists doubled

The number of participants in 2019 had doubled to 6,500 in 719 teams over 2018. Cities, districts, regions, municipalities, teams and individuals took part in the campaign and tracked their kilometres on an app. The final results will be announced before September 26, 2019.
