Hamburg's museums and exhibition rooms to reopen

9 March 2021
State-owned institutes to reopen on March 12 - viewings by appointment only

The Hamburger Kunsthalle reopened its doors Tuesday (March 9, 2021) and is now inviting visitors to view exhibitions of paintings by Max Beckmann and the Italian artist De Chirico. This comes as state museums and exhibition rooms in Hamburg prepare to reopen their doors from March 12, 2021 after the pandemic forced a closure lasting four months. Privately-owned galleries can also reopen under new COVID-19 regulations, according to the senate. Visitors must make an advance booking online or per telephone owing to the incidence levels of coronavirus. Museums must put extensive hygiene measures in place and ensure contact tracking.

Cultural sphere cautious

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, remarked: "It is right and responsible that cultural institutions are  among the first to reopen. The tried and tested hygiene concepts, spacious rooms and good ventilation systems in museums offer the best conditions for a safe cultural experience. And they are eager to show the exhibitions and projects that have had to remain closed for so long."  Brosda also expressed hope that progressive vaccinations and coronavirus testing will allow more reopenings in the cultural sector.

Reopenings

Bookings for the Deichtorhallen, the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe and other museums can be made from March 11, 2021. "As museums and exhibition rooms we are delighted to again contribute to cultural life in our city that goes beyond the digital as many presentations have reached far too few people so far," says Hans-Jörg Czech, Director of the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg.  More information can ge found on the webpages of the respective museums.
