Green Kayak Hamburg launches new season

Travel for free and clear waterways of rubbish

Residents of Hamburg can book the Danish environmental initiative Green Kayak's boats after the latest season launched in mid-May. Kayakers can use the boats for free provided they clear the water of any rubbish found during their trip. More than 3,000 kg of waste (or about 3.5 kg of waste per trip) were retrieved from Hamburg's waterways last year. The two-person boats can be hired at at six rental stations along the Alster, the canals, Goose Elbe and Bille. The initiative is backed by Hamburg's Ministry for the Environment.

Corona - no hindrance

"Kayaking, experiencing the Alster and its canals, collecting rubbish and protecting the environment is the concept behind GreenKayak. After the successful opening season in 2019, it's time to start again. Even though everything is different this year, kayak rentals are still possible despite corona," said Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment. The Danish environmental initiative has spread to many other European cities including Copenhagen, Berlin, Stockholm and Dublin.

For a greener Hamburg

The kayaks can be booked online and are available at rental stations in Zur Gondel, Sup Club Hamburg, Bootshaus Bergedorf, Paddel-Meier and the Käpt'n Prüsse and Hansa Steg from June 1st. Two life jackets, a bucket, two rubbish tongs, a map and a brochure showing nature preserves to be avoided, are aboard the kayak.
