Sustainable glamping idea wins over jury and audience - third prize also goes to Hamburg Metropolitan Region

The "Destinature Village" holiday camp in Hitzacker, in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, won the German Tourism Award during a digital ceremony on Tuesday (December 7, 2021). The project had secured 40 per cent of the public vote to scoop the "ADAC Audience Award", organized by the German Tourism Association (DTV). Under the theme of "Turning Nature into a Hotel", the village offers sustainable glamping in cabins or tent beds, which can be dismantled without causing any waste.

Village captures zeitgeist

Commenting on the winner, Norbert Kunz, Managing Director of DTV and jury member, said: "The Destinature Dorf by WERKHAUS Design und Produktion GmbH shows how glamping and a responsible approach to the environment can be combined, from construction to operation." The project captures the spirit of the times and is excellently implemented, he added.

Emphasis on sustainability

The Destinature Village was opened by Eva and Holger Danneberg, founders of WERKHAUS, in 2019 on the borders of the  the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve east of Hamburg. The camp's plug-in construction is based on the cradle-to-cradle principle and uses environment-friendly building materials. Apart from accommodation, the Destinature Village also features an organic bistro and an outdoor sauna. The project prevailed over 72 submissions to win the German Tourism Award.

Awards for two projects in Hamburg Metropolitan Region

The German Tourism Award honours projects that "add a breath of fresh air to German tourism", DTV said. The jury consists of tourism experts and media representatives. The winners are selected depending on degree of innovation, quality and customer orientation, economic efficiency and sustainability. Third prize went to the "Kehrwieder Package" by Fabio Haebel, Tim Mälzer and Hamburg Tourismus GmbH, which was designed in a show of solidarity with Hamburg's catering sector during the pandemic-induced lockdown.
