Emergency Lab coming to rescue of SMEs

9 July 2020
Three Hamburg-based firms take part in Emergency Lab #2

Three Hamburg-based companies recently took part in the free Emergency Lab #2 and developed strategies to overcome the corona crisis. The Cross Innovation Hub, which is part of Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft, had set up the Emergency Lab to help struggling SMEs find new, digital ways of remaining competitive. Launched by the Mittelstand 4.0 Competence Centre Hamburg and the Chamber of Commerce, companies develop digital solutions with experts from the Kreativ Gesellschaft in two and a half days.

Crisis management with creative people

"The first task was to make our complex product and market understandable. Once this was achieved, the project gained momentum, which surprised me. The result is more expansive than I expected," said Thorsten Schroeder, Managing Director of Trailer Lloyd Fahrzeugvermietung GmbH & Co. KG. The experts, Maren Heyn and Sean Loomis, had earlier  drawn up a plan to help the company contact existing and new customers earlier unlike their previous acquisition process. The new approach is designed to help the vehicle rental company, which is currently struggling with a 30 per cent drop in sales, to emerge stronger from the crisis.

Panik City Tours with open-air audio guide

Panik City Betriebs GmbH, which runs the biographical multimedia exhibition about singer Udo Lindenberg, is now earning only 20 per cent of its previous turnover even after reopening. The solution drawn up by Matthias Weber and Dominic Korte consists of an audio guide in an app with enhanced outdoor tours of Panik City. The aim is to turn the entire city of Hamburg into an exhibition centre.

Digital meeting room for Gebr. Runde GmbH

Gebr. Runde GmbH is also facing threats to its business. The company supplies Lufthansa and its subsidiaries with work and protective clothing for ground staff. However, its orders have plummeted by almost 100 per cent since mid-March 2020. Conventional customer acquisition is no longer working and prompted the experts to develop a digital meeting room called the "Runde Ecke".  Gebr. Runde GmbH received a digital company presentation instead of printed flyers and brochures.
